The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lowell includes the renovation and addition to an existing outdated facility. Located within close proximity to downtown Lowell, the new club will include 65,000 sq ft of space. The new design makes a strong connection with the adjacent Clemente Park and the National Historic Park Canal Parkway.
REDONDO BEACH HOUSE
REDONDO BEACH, CA
The 3,500-square-foot residence in Redondo Beach, California is located a half mile from the Pacific Ocean. The design comprises a massing of faceted volumes surrounding a central courtyard. The building is grounded at the suburban neighborhood condition, and a larger, more expressive volume rises to the west to maximize views to the ocean and the city. The scale of the neighborhood is preserved by single-story massing at the street. There are other contrasts in the project, such as a traditional rectilinear and trapezoidal floor plan, both set on one side of the home at ground level.

The east-west axis is maintained as the two entities circumscribe the courtyard. Folded metal roof planes conceal multiple exterior decks. The roof surface becomes the façade, breaking down the scale of the building, while simultaneously offering a smooth transition from one level to the next. The master bedroom appears to float above the swimmers’ pool. The body of water has a strong visual and aural connection to the building, and its effects are experienced throughout the house, referencing proximity to the ocean.
